WHAT DO PATENT DRAWINGS COST?Compare the actual work.

Before you commission

Figures. Sheets. Scope.

Published specialist prices and the questions to ask before accepting a drawing quote.

A useful patent drawing quote tells you what will be drawn, from which references, and in which files. A low price per drawing is difficult to judge until you know whether “drawing” means one view, one sheet or a complete set. Start with that distinction before comparing totals.

This guide compares published prices from specialist providers and explains the decisions that change a quote. It covers drawing production, not patent searches, application drafting, filing fees or legal representation. Dollar amounts below are USD, including on the Spanish version.

How much do patent drawings cost?

Two providers publish the following per-sheet rates. These are individual advertised prices checked on October 6, 2026, not a market average or binding quotes. Confirm current prices and inclusions directly.

A figure is not the same as a sheet

A figure is an individual view or diagram. A sheet is a page that can contain one or several figures, provided the arrangement remains readable. Three views placed on one sheet still involve three drawings. Ask the provider to list the figures and planned sheets separately.

Original COLONFILM study, not a filed patent. FIG. 1, FIG. 2 and FIG. 3 illustrate the difference between a view count and a sheet count.

For a hypothetical four-sheet job priced at $100 per sheet, the drawing subtotal is $400. That calculation does not tell you how many views are included, whether source files are supplied, or whether revisions and taxes cost extra. A four-figure package is not automatically equivalent to that four-sheet quote.

What changes a patent drawing quote?

  • Reference quality: clean, complete sketches need different work from blurred photos or conflicting versions.
  • Geometry and detail: a simple outline is different from a cutaway, assembly or complex surface. Ask whether reconstructing geometry is included.
  • Number of views: list the requested views rather than asking for “a drawing of the product.”
  • Changes: label corrections, a new component and a revised invention are different types of work.
  • Delivery: confirm PDF, editable format, sheet size and whether a later correction round is included.

Utility, design and diagrams: compare the right work

US utility and design applications have different purposes. In a design application, the drawings must provide a complete visual disclosure of the claimed appearance; selecting the right views is part of that task. A generic diagram package should not be treated as a complete design-patent set. See the USPTO design patent guide. If filing elsewhere, confirm the relevant office and drawing brief with your patent professional.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote

  • Which exact figures and sheets does this fee cover?
  • Can you work from these references, and what is missing?
  • Who confirms technical accuracy and the required views?
  • What files will I receive, and can I edit them later?
  • How are corrections, new views and office-requested changes priced?
  • What are the delivery date, feedback deadlines and total payable amount?

Keep one approved reference version and consolidate feedback. Paying less for a clear, limited scope can make sense. Paying for an incomplete set and then commissioning the missing work separately may not. A relevant sample and a precise drawing list tell you more than a generic promise of unlimited revisions.

Prepare a brief before requesting prices

Use our patent drawing brief checklist to organise your views, references and files. It includes a free text template you can send to a drawing provider.

Want to discuss a simple redraw or diagram with COLONFILM? Start with a non-confidential description, the number of figures and the files you need. We will assess whether the scope fits before proposing work. This guide is a purchasing aid, not a patentability assessment or a promise of filing acceptance.
